Climb up pilot peak in lasal mtns (Moab)
27 JULY 2003

Trip Map

The mountain range found to the East of Moab Utah is known as the La Sal Mountains. They are easily accessible and they provide for a quick day or overnight accent. Please note that although they do provide a little relief from the heat of the desert floor, they can still be quite warm in the summertime during the day, and water can be scarce at higher elevations. Also be aware that summer lightning storms can appear within minutes. These mountains are fun.

I learned a very valuable lesson this day with Strider. WHEN YOUR DOG BEGINS TO OVERHEAT, INDICATED BY OVERPANTING.... STOP NOW!!!! THE HIKE IS OVER, GENTLY DECEND AFTER HE RESUMES NORMAL BREATHING AND IS WELL WATERED AND GET HIM TO A COMFORTABLE LOCATION AND TEMPERATURE....

Looking from the South into Miners Basin, there is water and gold in them thar hills Ma! The green covered rolling peak in the middle is known as Horse Mountain and the pass to the right of that is known in our hiking circle as Jackass Pass. The pass was named after me by my sister Polly when she got pissed off at me when we got split up on that pass a few years ago:)

Just a few more steps til the top. Pilots Peak is not an official name but I saw this minor peak referred to as such on a map I once saw. Therefore the name stuck with me and in a way this is a sacred place because my puppy Prissy (now dearly departed) climbed to the top of this peak on her first expedition. I scattered a few of her ashes this day so she could once again be with her "dada" for a bit of adventure. This peak is also featured in a previous trip report "Trans Mtn Trail".
